    Smart Power Myanmar - Smart Power Myanmar (SPM) is an integrated country platform that will accelerate rural electrification to spur economic growth and transform rural communities. With an initial investment from The Rockefeller Foundation, SPM aims to catalyze investment of hundreds of millions of dollars to support the rollout of thousands of mini-grids and other rural electrification solutions. SPM is received additional support from its Founding Members: The World Bank, USAID and Yoma Strategic Holdings. Smart Power Myanmar’s vision is a natural extension of achievements made by Pact over several years under the Ahlin Yaung program which has brought energy to rural communities in Myanmar on a household-by-household basis. Fortified by additional evidence and insights into current and potential energy use (see our recent study Bridging the Energy Gap), Smart Power Myanmar will identify and promote business models to stabilize and strengthen the rural market for renewable energy, addressing both demand- and supply-side challenges. SPM is seeking highly experienced energy professionals with significant experience from both the private and public sector who are committed to improving access to energy and economic growth.

    Position Overview

    Smart Power Myanmar is seeking a qualified candidate (f/m) for a 12-month part-time consultancy as technical research and content writer. The successful candidate will work with our communication and program implementation teams to produce various high-quality and high-impact communication products that help promote our mission and activities. These will include: technical briefs, insight stories and blogs, as well as quarterly reports and internal and external reports and possibly also proposals for funding. The content will contribute to Smart Power Myanmar’s objective of using data to tell stories, deliver messages and advocate for systemic change. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in both research and journalism, and will have excellent writing proficiency in English, ability to distil raw material into stories and research pieces and creative skills to contribute to editorial planning. We are also looking for someone who has proven experience working well with field staff (ideally in Myanmar) in order to extract key learning from the field to translate those insights into global stories.

    Key Responsibilities

    We envisage that this role will require approximately 8-10 days per month, subject to ebbs and flows depending on workflows and periodic special projects. The writer’s key responsibilities will include the following activities and deliverables:

    1. Develop, coordinate and produce the development of our SPM’s rolling editorial content. Develop a pipeline of stories/briefs/one-pagers/case studies/blogs/knowledge products targeted at key audiences, that will be delivered through Smart Power Myanmar’s communication channels. We anticipate a pipeline of at least one quality technical case study and 1-2 blogs per month.
    2. Develop stories and content that have local and global significance, stories that not only match our Communications Strategy, but are also in line with our overall 3-year strategy. This will require a deep appreciation for linking story content with strategic thinking.
    3. Prepare high quality content on tight deadlines for social media and website posting and, in some cases, for subsequent translation to Myanmar language. Work with Smart Power Myanmar’s communication team in Yangon, our Data Advisor in Namibia, and our Energy Advisor in New York to source, review, edit and target content collected, produce materials required (press releases, briefs, knowledge products etc) and prepare supporting communications according to Smart Power Myanmar’s branding and communication guidelines.
    4. Participate (in-person or remotely) and lead monthly editorial meeting to lay out the monthly pipeline of content, deciding on key messages to be delivered in the time period, key target audience, type and style of content (i.e. policy brief/one-pager/blog) and the communication channels. As needed, adapt content to the different communication channels, e.g. a one-pager for the website, use at events/meetings and/or promoted through posts on Facebook and Twitter
    5. Work with SPM communication team on developing periodic guidance for Smart Power Myanmar’s program team on identifying and collecting stories in the field that will be used to produce communication products.
    6. Engage with local and international media outlets to develop stories through placements, interviews and other strategic communications to amplify our overall messaging and national narrative.
    7. Play an important role in helping SPM coordinate with the Rockefeller Foundation Communications Team in New York and the Pact communications team in Washington, DC, and potentially other Founding Members to coordinate launch plans, synchronize communications activities, as needed, to maximize SPM’s profile and mission through our various channels.

    Basic Requirements

    • Relevant degree in journalism, English, creative writing, research or related field. Candidates with at least a Bachelor's degree in any of these fields plus at least 2 years' relevant experience will be considered.
    • Detail-oriented with ability to write in perfect English, adapting the content to technical, business and social sector’s language. Experience living and working in Myanmar is a definite plus, though we are open to remote/virtual working arrangements as long as candidates are flexible and can demonstrate ability to work extremely effectively and efficiently to tight deadlines in a virtual setting.
    • Proven experience to interpret raw data and information from the field to produce (a) a regular and consistent flow (i.e. monthly) blogs and impact stories that highlight socio-economic impacts of organisation’s work, and (b) periodic (i.e. quarterly or ad hoc) support for quarterly reports, internal and external technical reports and funding proposals.
    • Ideally, we are looking for a candidate with journalistic, research and business experience in both developed and developing country contexts. Must have an appreciation for the development world, and ideally some experience working for development or donor organizations.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge and experience/interest in energy and/or rural agriculture sectors is a plus.
